Hon. Dr. Thomas W. Anabah

Honourable Doctor Thomas Winsum Anabah is a member of parliament for the Garu Constituency, a distinguished figure in Ghana’s healthcare sector, renowned for his expertise in medicine, healthcare management, and policy advocacy. With a background in anesthesiology, resuscitation, and critical care, he has significantly contributed to healthcare innovations and medical education.

Dr. Anabah specializes in anesthesiology, emergency medicine, and postoperative care. He has played a key role in advancing medical education, pioneering Africa’s first Bachelor of Science (BSc) program in Nurse Anesthesia to address a critical gap in anaesthetic care. His research in pharmacology, maternal health, and telemedicine has influenced healthcare policies in Ghana and beyond.

His leadership in healthcare policy and hospital management is evident in his tenure as Medical Director of The Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Regional Hospital) in Accra, where he modernized the facility and introduced advanced surgical and telemedicine capabilities. His advocacy also led to the procurement of 320 pulse oximeters for Ghanaian hospitals, improving patient monitoring.

He played a vital role in establishing critical care and obstetric high-dependency units at Tamale Teaching Hospital, significantly improving maternal healthcare services.

Dr. Anabah’s leadership extends to governance and community service. He serves on the boards of The Trust Hospital Company Ltd and COMPASS Ghana. He also served on Habana Medical Service, and ‘Nazareth Home for God’s Children’ in Northern Ghana.

Additionally, he is a key participant in the WHO Anaesthesiology Working Group and a board member at UDS. His involvement in emergency healthcare planning includes serving on the Tamale Airport Emergency Committee and the Ministerial Committee on Emergencies for the Ministry of Health.

Dr. Anabah’s legacy is defined by his dedication to healthcare innovation, education, and public service. His contributions to medical research, hospital management, and policy formulation have improved healthcare delivery in Ghana. Looking ahead, he aims to expand telemedicine services, enhance healthcare financing models, and foster international collaborations for medical research and policy development.

Dr. Anabah holds an MSc in Critical Care and Emergencies from La Sapienza University in Italy and specialized in Anesthesiology and Resuscitation at the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences in Cuba. His medical degree from the same institution laid the foundation for his career in healthcare and research.

He has published over 15 peer-reviewed articles on critical healthcare topics, including neonatal outcome and maternal health, and Healthcare policy and emergency preparedness during outbreaks. He has also organized over 28 professional workshops and conferences to advance medical knowledge and policy development. His memberships in esteemed medical associations including the Ghana Medical Association, the Ghana Anaesthetist Society, and the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland.
